A masterclass to create quality live virtual encounters

A recent partner described Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium's model of virtual field trips as “a very useful masterclass for every organization working to create quality live virtual encounters.”

Why the Model Works

They highlighted how curated graphics were seamlessly integrated with the presenter and a live axolotl camera, and how time was intentionally taken to geographically orient learners—starting with a zoomed-out view of Earth and moving all the way to ground level. Context matters, especially for young virtual learners.

They also noted the importance of strong production values: clear video and audio, a presenter who balanced subject-matter authority with genuine enthusiasm, and careful pacing and planning. The result was described as the best-planned virtual event they have experienced in years.

Impact on Learners

Just as meaningful was the impact on students. The program integrated science with etymology, geography, and related disciplines, creating space for curiosity and joy. Learners from both urban and rural communities participated together in a shared experience.

Virtual field trips are not just about streaming content. When done well, they are about connection, context, and equity in access to high-quality learning.

See It in Action

If you would like to experience this approach firsthand, you can sign up for a free Axolotl Waddle WAVE on Saturday, May 2, in celebration of #SalamanderSaturday and #SuncoastRemakeDays2026.

Grateful to our Minnesota families for the thoughtful reflection and for trusting Mote to learn alongside their students, and to the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC) for making the connection.
